Cars, Scabies and Man Eating Fish

July 6, 2010

I started my day with a factory tour of Mazda, home of the largest factory line in the world. The Mazda complex is so large that it could contain 97 football stadiums and it does contain dormitories for singles, a gym, it`s own port, it`s own public transportation, a hospital, a water treatment plant, 5 fire stations, and all the 7,000 parking spots around this plant are filled with Mazda cars! Pretty impressive! After my free factory tour I took off for Miyajima Island to see the water torii, part of the Itsukushima Shrine, and one of Japan`s three top rated sights. It was on this lushious island where I apparently contracted scabies after passing Scabies Rock on my hike and then not touching the rock to get rid of my newly contracted scabies. Sorry Peter! This was the best and most difficult hike I have done yet and the friendly deer are only a plus. After my 3 hours of hiking I made it back into town where I sacrificed myself to man-eating fish (I assure you it was only for their good) before returning to my hostel for the night.

1962 Mazda Carol600

The longest factory line in the world - I was sooo not allowed to take this photo. If I end up in jail in Japan, you will all know why.

Mazda 787B - the first Japanese car to win the Le Mans 24 Hour Endurance Race in 1991.
The Mazda Kiyora concept car. The roof of this car is made to collect rain water, which it then purifies and drains into the water bottle inside the car.

Just call me Snow White.

The most beautiful hike I have done yet, minus the 535 meters climbed in 2.5 kilometers! I could have been rock climbing it felt so steep is spots.

I am not even at the top yet!

Kuguri-iwa Rock, or in English: the-duck-under-rock. The fated scabies rock was near here.

Kiezu-no-hi or the Eternal Flame.Apparently this flame has been burning for 1200 years. Looks like smoldering would be a more accurate description.

The torii for the Itsukushima Shrine - now a UNESCO site.

The pain was unbearable.

The ultimate vegan sacrifice - feeding myself to the fish.

  1. Did they tickle? I did this in Cambodia and could barely keep my feet in the water for the first minute or two. It felt so funny!

  2. Thanks, Alison. Fish are now on my list of "foods I will not eat". Send me a photo of "why bacon is gross" and I'll be a vegetarian again! Keep 'em coming. Your blog is the highlight of my day,(except for the Tour de France which is off to a bloody, bone breaking start this year). miss you, kim
